4.2 million girls in Kenya are missing
20% of their education because
they don't have access to sanitary pads
What Are We Doing?
The Davis Sunrise Rotary Club sponsored a monthly sewing bee in early 2017 to help support girls in Uganda who were missing school while menstruating each month.
The group started by sewing and mailing pads to developing countries. In 2018 the group won a grant to launch a pilot project in Nakuru, Kenya.
The Davis group developed a hybrid pattern from several other reusable sanitary pad designs and their Kenyan partners sourced all of the materials in Kenya.
The pilot project helped 1,000 girls stay in school and a group of women form a sewing cooperative to support their families.
The pilot project is now being modeled in Mexico. Our hope is to share our ideas and experiences freely with others so that we can continue to improve the pattern and it can be adopted all across the globe to help more girls get an education.
